Tatas to exit Bengal if protests continue

August 29, 2008

Can agriculture and industry co-exist?

"I see no conflict between agriculture and industry. There can be a happy marriage between the two, provided the two respect each other," said Anuradha Talwar, president of Paschimbanga Khsetmajur Samity, an apolitical, non-government organisation.

PKS has set up a stall near the dharna manch to express solidarity.

"But we have nothing to do with politics," stated Talwar. "We are here because we feel Banerjee's movement is in the interest of the farmers."

"We don't want the Tatas to move out of Bengal but we want them to show respect to our farmers," she said.

"It's high time both the sides worked out an amicable solution."

If the house of Tatas, known for its values and care for society, can face such resistance, the much needed fresh wave of industrialisation in the country would suffer, said Mittal.

Expressing similar views, Godrej & Boyce Manufacturing Co's chairman and managing director Jamshyd N Godrej said,"Nano's moving out would be a setback for not just West Bengal but for the entire country."

The small car project was a statement of the coming of age of Indian manufacturing, he said, adding "it is, therefore, very unfortunate that the entire project is facing a political situation which it does not warrant".
