Romancing the Nilgiris
Mettupalayam can also be reached from Chennai via Coimbatore by the Nilgiri Express train. It reaches Mettupalayam at 6.30 am, just in time for you to take the toy train to Ooty which departs at 7.10 am.
I, however, could not get tickets as it was a long weekend.

The Mettupalayam railway station booking office opens at 5.30 am. You should be there early to book your ticket, but if you are travelling during peak season, then you need to reserve your seat at least a day in advance.
I thought quickly (that is, after getting a noncommittal answer from the station master about ticket availability and an early breakfast of idli-vada at the station canteen where I sat for about half an hour) and decided to go to Ooty by bus and take the train on my return journey to Mettupalayam.
