Romancing the Nilgiris

My plan was to take the Nilgiri Passenger train to Ooty from Mettupalayam, a small town at the foothills of the Nilgiris.

The train, popularly known as the toy train covers a distance of 46 km in five hours uphill, and in three and a half hours on the return journey.

Airfare for Rs 599 and less!

I took a bus from Coimbatore to Mettupalayam in the night itself, stayed there in a lodge (you will find plenty of lodging options at very economical rates) so that I could board the train in the morning.

Buses ply from Coimbatore to Mettupalayam every half hour. The bus stand is not too far from Coimbatore's main bus stand, Gandhipuram.
