Gaiam Jute mat

July 21, 2008
Cost: Around $ 40

Available: Only abroad

Star rating: 3

Shred factor: Zilch, long life.

Steady or slippery: Slides on tiles or smooth surfaces.

Luxury: Elegant

Level of practice: Intermediate

It is aesthetically appealing and elegant, and continues to remain elegant even with long-term use. The mat has a jute-weave base, giving it an earthy texture. However, I found that when doing handstands or hand flow you have to factor in a surprise slip, as the mat tends to move if placed on a smooth surface like ceramic tiles.

An advanced practitioner can tackle that well enough, but s/he will find that this subtle shift of the mat base can disorient one in the handstand flows. Similar disorienting shifts happen while attempting wheel variations, during which the mat must not move even lightly while you lift off a hand or foot when your body is curved or aloft since it can make you crash. However, this mat is steady (even on a slippery surface) while doing the surya namaskar series.

Since on a rough surface this mat's grip is very steady, I would think it is a good investment for an intermediate level practitioner for long-term or intense sadhana since it does not shred at all.
