What is Feng Shui?

September 14, 2007
Feng Shui is the study of energy (Chi) and how its circulation affects people. The circulation of this invisible energy can be blocked or distorted by the environment, thus creating Shar Chi (or negative energy), and that's where Feng Shui comes in.

"We can unblock Chi and provide good fortune and harmony in your home, office or business," says Nishanth Thoppil, Feng Shui and Vaastu consultant at The Art of Living International Ashram in Bangalore.

Feng Shui, it is believed, creates balance, harmony and prosperity in one's life by fine-tuning the art of arranging elements in a room, home or office.

But why has Feng Shui become so popular in India? As in other systems, Feng Shui too was initially received with doubt but as the masters put it, people accepted the art once they started practicing it.

The reasons for this acceptance, says Thoppil, came when practitioners started enjoying better health, clear decision making, improved concentration and performance, increased earning capacity, happier personal relationships, harmony within the family and a more positive and mental attitude.

Though the origin of Feng Shui in India dates back to the days of the construction of Buddhist monasteries, it entered the common man’s life only during the 1970s.
