Like whatever I have seen of Kerala - Kumarakom, Thekkadi, Kovalam, Cochin
- Munnar was lush green. At the end of April, the weather was cool and
evenings required a denim jacket.
Knowing the weather, the hotel room didn't have any fans - leave the windows open and enjoy the cool crisp air. In the evenings, there is every good chance that you'll find mist floating in through one window and going out from the next.
And yes, how can I forget - when in Munnar, do try the ice tea. The light
brew from the local tea gardens, with a dash of honey and lime is -
believe me - to die for. It's refreshing and nothing like the synthetic
concoction doled out at most spiffy restaurants in Mumbai.
My friend George, a true-blue Malayali, had tried booking us at Tall
Trees, supposedly that's where Amitabh Bachchan and gang had stayed during
the shooting of Nishabd. But the said place was booked and Blackberry
Hills, which was thronging with German tourists, was our abode in the
hills for two days.
A comfortable hotel, it had a limited menu but very good food. A small
note in the room informed guests that since food was cooked from scratch
after it was ordered, visitors should allow for a half hour to 45 minutes
gap for the food to be served.
The rooms were comfortable but the bathrooms could do with some sprucing
up, I had to wipe the dust around the sink and the white towels looked a
little unclean. But the astounding view from the room made up for these shortcomings.
