Merudandasana (Spinal pose)

December 10, 2007
Sit in the classic titali or butterfly pose, with legs bent at knees, soles touching. Inhale. Grasp each big toe with each index finger. Exhale.

Inhaling, lift feet off the ground, slowly straightening the legs and spreading them wide simultaneously. (If balance is shaky lean slightly against any firm support) Hold for as long as you can, breathing normally, keeping attention fixed on any spot in front of you to facilitate balance. Continue breathing evenly.

To release, fold legs back at knee, while gently lowering legs back to the ground.

Avoid: If having circulatory or spinal problems.

Benefits: Aids weight loss. Releases stress. Is a mood-uplifting pose, as are all the previous poses. Tones spinal nerves. Boosts concentration.
