India batters face trial by spin in Galle

image

India captain Shubman Gill has won the toss and elected to bat in the 1st Test in Galle on Saturday.

India will play the same XI that played in the warm-up, so no place for Sarfaraz Khan in the game today.

Sri Lanka have a debutant in off spinner Keshara Nuwantha.

Playing XIs:

India: Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Shubman Gill(c), Devdutt Padikkal, Rishabh Pant(w), Ravindra Jadeja, Dhruv Jurel, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna

Sri Lanka: Lahiru Udara, Nishan Madushka, Dinesh Chandimal, Kamindu Mendis, Dhananjaya de Silva(c), Sonal Dinusha, Niroshan Dickwella(w), Keshara Nuwantha, Prabath Jayasuriya, Lahiru Kumara, Asitha Fernando

A gruelling trial by spin awaits Indian batters in the two-Test series against Sri Lanka beginning in Galle on Saturday with head coach Gautam Gambhir's standing as the country's red-ball in-charge relying heavily on its outcome.

Under Gambhir, India have been a near-infallible white-ball unit as revealed by their rampaging title-winning runs in the Champions Trophy, Asia Cup and T20 World Cup.

However, finding redemption in Galle is a tough task for visiting teams.

Often, dreams die here. If that sounds glib, then one look at the numbers would be enough. Sri Lanka have won 27 of the 49 Tests played in Galle since 1998, a dominance built around crafty spinners turning the knife in.

The home nation has long moved away from the heady days of Muttiah Muralitharan and Rangana Herath, but they still have spinners Prabath Jayasuriya and Ramesh Mendis, who have made Galle their fortress.

So, the situation is not to the liking of this particular Indian team, whose batters struggled massively against the likes of Mitchell Santner and Simon Harmer in the not-so-distant past.

But this team carries an eerie similarity to the squad that came to these shores in 2017, the last time India played a Test series in Sri Lanka.

The Virat Kohli-led outfit featured a bunch of players who were in the middle phase of their careers but went back with a 3-0 triumph, including one at Galle, and it kicked off a period of India's dominance in Test cricket.

The 2026 squad led by a young captain -- Shubman Gill -- too is brimming with mid-level seniors and hopefuls, and they are also in need of such a spark that can ignite their journey back to the top.

But for all that, they need to find a way out of the spin quagmire and tough personal spaces, especially Rishabh Pant and Dhruv Jurel, who might get the nod ahead of Sarfaraz Khan.

Their recent outings have been way below par. Runs from these two middle-order batters and their performance against Sri Lankan spinners will carry huge significance in this rubber.

India will also hope for some hefty runs from the top three batters -- K L Rahul, Yashasvi Jaiswal and Devdutt Padikkal, even though Gill will be the fulcrum. Devdutt has a golden chance to keep himself in fray for the No. 3 spot even when original choice Sai Sudharsan returns from his toe injury.

But it is equally important for Indian bowlers to find their groove on Lankan pitches.

The tourists are expected to field three spinners -- Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar and Ravindra Jadeja -- in Galle, and they need to hit the right spots.

The Galle track will not be diabolical and is only expected to offer the natural wear and tear as the match progresses, amplifying the need for bowlers to trust their skills and find the right lines here.

The spinners will do the bulk of bowling but lead pacer Mohammad Siraj and his support cast -- most likely Prasidh Krishna -- will have to keep their ends tight, if not fetch some timely breakthroughs.

On their part, Sri Lanka will hope that they can overcome the lack of red-ball match time to challenge India meaningfully. The hosts went nearly a year without a Test match before playing in the West Indies in June-July, and skipper Dhananjaya de Silva will have to rally his players around against a stronger team than the Caribbeans.

However, India, with a dimmed Test aura, too have their own set of complications from which they will be hoping to liberate themselves on another Independence Day.

A battle between beseeched teams has often produced classics, and this series too might not be an exception.
