Chronology of clash between India and the ICC
  • Nov 20 - ICC match referee Mike Denness disciplines six Indian players, including Sachin Tendulkar, during the second Test against South Africa at Port Elizabeth. Batsman Virender Sehwag is banned for one match for dissent. Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) president Jagmohan Dalmiya calls for Denness to be replaced for the third Test.

  • Nov 21 - International Cricket Council chief executive Malcolm Speed rejects Dalmiya's request. Indians demonstrate in the streets, burning effigies of Denness.

  • Nov 22 - South African government issues statement in support of Indian team. South African cricket board agrees to replace Denness. Speed says ICC will refuse to recognise the third match between India and South Africa as an official Test if it goes ahead without Denness as match referee.

  • Nov 23 - Unofficial Test starts with former South Africa wicketkeeper Denis Lindsay as match referee. Sehwag is not included in India team.

  • Nov 26 - Dalmiya says Sehwag has served his suspension and will be available to play in first Test against England starting in Mohali on December 3.

  • Nov 27 - ICC set a deadline of 0630 GMT on Friday for India to make a final decision on whether or not Sehwag will play against England.

  • Nov 28 - Sehwag named in 14-man squad for first Test. Dalmiya refuses to accept ICC deadline.

  • Nov 29 - ICC extend deadline until Saturday.

  • Nov 30 - India agree to drop Sehwag. ICC set up commission to examine Denness's decisions.

  • Who got what
  • Sachin Tendulkar: One-match ban (suspended), fined 75% of match fee

  • Virender Sehwag: Immediate one-match ban, fined 75% of match fee

  • Harbhajan Singh, Deep Dasgupta and Shiv Sunder Das: Same punishment as Tendulkar

  • Sourav Ganguly: One-Test, two ODI ban (both suspended), assuming he remains as captain

  • Quotes
  • It was a move that had India seething with rage, while dispassionate experts, such as Richie Benaud, made sense of it: "If that is not picking the seam of a cricket ball, then I played the lead in Mrs Doubtfire."
  • The other view
  • Dalmiya can survive any stand-off

  • Rescue bid for India Test
