Q. The government is believed to be considering decontrolling petrol prices, a move that may see rates being hiked by Rs 16-17 a litre. The oil ministry had also asked for lowering of excise duty on the two fuels but Finance Ministry is not obliging. With the prices of petrol fast reaching unaffordable levels, the finance ministry is still hellbent on keeping the duties unchanged. The duties are still in percentage term, with every price rise the govt gets more money.
