[Remo Fernandes would be licking postage stamps but for the Net]

   Arti R

The name is:
Remo Fernandes

Claim to fame:
Hits like Jalwa and O Meri Munni. Released India's first cyber song via fabmart.com. Latest album,'India Beyond'.

How net savvy are you?
On a scale of 1 to 10, I'd rate myself about 7.

What do you enjoy doing online?
I email, and check out new developments in music gear. I also download the latest Operating Systems for equipment in my recording studio and find information on countries and places I visit. I recently bought a new digital photo camera, and used the Net to decide which was the best one. I enjoy communicating with people through my Web site.

And, I shall be truthful: I flirt occasionally too.

How much time do you spend online?
First thing in the morning: Check my email. Last thing at night: Check my email. About half a dozen times during the day: Check my email. How much time online? Way too much!

Your idea of a perfect Web site?
Informative and interesting but to the point, without unnecessary frills like moving graphics and audio clips that take forever to download, and are usually there just to impress, not inform.

Favourite bookmarks?
I don't really have any favourite sites that I visit regularly, unless you count rediff.com which I use for Web mail. That's hooked me on to Rediff news - Indian and worldwide. I read the same news the next morning in the Goa papers.

What do you think about Napster and the easy availability of music online?
Being a musician, I particularly disagree with illegal music downloads. I know how much effort and expense it takes to create those four minutes of music. How can fans love a musician and then rip him off?

Ever been ego-surfing?
Yes, I did when I first got an Internet connection years ago. I didn't expect anything at all, and was very excited and a bit flattered to see quite a few, including some pirate sites, that provided all my music as free downloads!

Something you would like to buy or sell online?
I've bought books and music online via different sites. Haven't sold anything though - unless you count my albums, that can be ordered online (remofernandes.com, www.fabmart.com, www.goacom.com/angels).

Oh, I have this brand new unused acrylic basketball board I'd like to sell. Anyone interested?

Any objects of desire?
While I may lust after a laptop, I don't have one because I already spend enough time on my three computer set-ups [music studio, video/graphic workstation, and office]. So when I'm on the move, I like to read or just look at the scenery, not at yet another monitor.

What do you like most about the Internet? What do you hate about it?
The same as everyone else, I'm sure. I love e-mail. Because it has renewed my acquaintance with people I've always meant to keep in touch with, but was too lazy to send snail mail to.

What I hate are people who think they can't say how much they care unless they send you a 97 MB file.

Have you ever chatted with strangers? Did you tell them who you were?
I've chatted, but didn't reveal my identity, except when they were from a country where my name wasn't known.

Any strange experiences?
On ICQ, I once got this message from someone in Pakistan saying "I hate you bloody Indians!" I answered, "I love you too!" and promptly put him on my ignore list.

If you could change something about the Internet, what would it be?
Ask for better and faster Internet lines in India, especially in the quiet rural areas of Goa where I live. Also, a total ban on viruses and commercial sites worming their way into your mailbox.

If the Internet didn't exist, you would be…
Licking postage stamps.
