How do I manage my mail folder? [Ask Dr. Know]
  I have taken a Internet
  connection. What should
I do to make my presence
  felt and tell my friends
  I am available online?

[Bubbles Helps out]

- Where do I find NGOs working on AIDS?

- What is cryptography?

- Where do I get tech details on HTML?

- Where do I complain about junk email?

That is an interesting question, Akshaye. Not everyone wants to be found when they are online! For example, I try and keep a low profile since I do not want to spend the whole day answering email.

But, on the other hand, Bubbles is omnipresent on the Net. He has even registered himself as an active member of the 'Parrots for World Peace' Society to make sure he leaves no stone unturned to make his presence felt.

Coming back to your question, here are some things you can do to get noticed online.

WEB RESOURCES:

Get your own email address and then pass it on to friends, print it on your business card if possible. Even if you have an office email address, register yourself with one of the free email services like Rediffmail and get a personal email address, which will read yourname@rediffmail.com. You are now ready for some hectic emailing activity once people know you are available!

Get your own free home page. This is a reat way to announce your presence. It's also your own little nook in yberspace. If your interest is in 'robots', you can either create a site based on it, or maybe a personal biography.

If you have created a site on a particular topic, you can choose to register your site with search engines. This means that if your site is on 'robots', anyone searching for sites on robots will be served your page, depending upon its relevance.

Download an instant messenger like Rediff Bol and chat with friends online. Once you download this software, your friends will also be able to know whether or not you are online at a particular time.

Create your photo album online. If you went for a great trip recently, you might want to share the photographs with friends and family and keep them posted.

Join a discussion group or susbscribe to a mailing list. This is a great way to meet and exchange ideas with more people.

You can also register with the alumni of your school or college (if they have a web site) to keep in touch with old friends and also let them know that you are available online. You can try out Batchmates, Alumni.net and Indian Classmates.

Join a chatroom. Many Net users try out different chat rooms until they find one where they feel comfortable and meet people with similar interests. It's also a great way to make friends.

Be creative! Like Bubbles actually posted his photograph in Hot or Not for all to see. Of course, you don't have to be desperate. But go ahead and experiment and if you have any more ideas for newbies, share them with us!
