While email has been a boon as far as communication goes, there are also people who get so bogged down by it, that they do little else but sort through their email during the day.

That is what makes email management important. Take Bubbles, my pet parrot, for example. He has over four accounts and all of them are in such a state of disorder that he is always struggling to find things in his mailbox.

Here are a few tips on how to manage your mailbox more effectively.

Most of us use email but do not utilise it properly. This article has some tips on how you can make the most of your email.

Create folders to organise your email rather than clogging up your inbox. Move messages to the relevant folders as soon as you finish reading them. Delete mail you have no use for immediately. Filters are useful when you subscribe to a newsletter or a group. In this case, the email will go directly to the folder that you have allocated, without jamming your inbox.

Sending an email is so easy that we often don't think about what we write. It pays to spend some time on your mail, especially if it's an official one, before pressing the send button.

This beginner's guide and 10 tips for effective email which includes pointers like 'Think before you write', 'Keep your message concise' and 'E-mail is not necessarily confidential' should be helpful.

You can customise your email by changing the font and colour and adding an attractive background. If you are going on holiday, you can set an 'Auto Reply' informing people that you will not be available. Most email services offer this option.

As Bubbles has learnt from experience, unless you learn how to manage your email effectively, it could turn out to be a nightmare.
