You can easily detect the number of visitors to your Web site by using a hit
counter. There are several sites offering such counters free. Apart from
telling you the total number of hits, counters can also indicate which
country your visitors live in, which days and at what time they visit your
site, how they discovered it, and whether they are growing in number.
Counters can also keep track of unique visitors. The information provided by
counters is valuable, as it enables you to structure your site according to
your visitors' preferences.
CyberCount, a free graphical hit-counter and
tracking system, helps you keep count of your visitors by inserting just one
line of code on your pages. It tells you where your guests came from and
which browser they used. You can customise your counter by choosing from a
range of colours and borders, or keep it invisible. TheCounter has a free version, which performs the same
functions, and sends you a weekly stats report.
Aaddzz allows you to create and
configure free counters or trackers in a variety of font styles, and also
provides information on where visitors come from, their screen resolution,
and so on. Once you register with Aaddzz, you can add up to five counters
and trackers to your site. Stats4You provides a
similar service.
If you want a Java counter, make sure you visit Jcount. All you've got to do is enter your name, e-mail
address and a password, and it will generate a piece of code, which you can
then paste into your site. The site also offers you a free guestbook. On the
other hand, GoStats requires you to fill in a rather
lengthy online form, but rewards you by providing a detailed analysis of
hourly, daily and weekly hits, country stats, language stats (important,
because if you find that many visitors speak another language, you might
want to include a welcome message in their language), annual trends and a
list of your last 20 guests.
If you are the do-it-yourself kind, Digits will take you through a step-by-step
procedure to create your counter. This is especially recommended to those
not very familiar with the Net.
Lastly, most sites that offer free Web pages also provide a hit counter.
Bubbles has such a counter on his Web site. It has received just two hits to
date.
