A senior police officer said motorcycle-borne militants fired indiscriminately at a passing vehicle of the Central Reserve Police Force in Rainawari locality of the capital city wounding seven jawans.

"The injured jawans were immediately shifted to hospital for treatment and condition of two is critical," the officer added.

The vehicle was carrying jawans for law and order duties in the city.

In the meanwhile, hard-line separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani had called for a strike on Wednesday against the alleged rape and murder of two young women in south Kashmir's Shopian town in May 2009.

Shops are shut in Srinagar where public transport is off the roads. However, private transport was seen plying on the streets here.

Authorities have tightened security arrangements in the city.
