Railway GMs sacked following accidents

South Eastern Railway General Manager S Ramanathan and his counterpart in the Central Railway, N C Sinha, have been ''summarily'' removed from their posts for ''dereliction of duty'', official sources said. Action is also being considered against general manager of Western Railway, Bombay.

The recent train mishap in Bilaspur district of Madhya Pradesh where five coaches of the Ahmedabad-Howrah Express derailed and fell into the dry Asemi river occurred in the jurisdiction of the South-Eastern Railway. At least 84 passengers were killed and 200 were injured. The train accident in Faridabad in July occurred in Central Railway territory. Thirteen people died in that mishap.

Prime Minister Inder Kumar Gujral was reportedly taken into confidence by Railway Minister Ram Vilas Paswan before action is taken, the sources said.

Paswan and Railway Board officials are reportedly concerned because the recent train accidents occurred due to human negligence.

The action against these top officials is being interpreted as a warning that officials should to monitor safety measures and ensure that failures on the part of the employees are avoided.
