Videos: Arundhati Roy on romanticising violence

Last updated on: June 3, 2010 20:17 IST

Writer-activist Arundhati Roy was in Mumbai on Wednesday to speak on 'War on people' at the Marathi Patrakar Sangh.

Speaking about the criticism against her that she romanticised violence in her essay in the Outlook magazine, Roy said people like it when violence is romaticised in our movies via "airheads with biceps and AK-47 guns," but shirk when the violence of real poor people around us is romanticised.

'PM Singh can now watch the mayhem unfold'

She recited a poem written by an activist in Chhattisgarh soon after the Congress had lost power to the Bharatiya Janata Party.

The activist was saying that since Manmohan Singh, who as the finance minister had in the early 1990s set the ball rolling in terms of liberalisation, he could now sit back and watch the mayhem unfold.

'What do we mean by Maoists?'

Recalling a meeting she had with a police officer in Chhattisgarh, Roy ridiculed the police's perception of Maoists.
