Injured athlete shifted to Lucknow hospital

April 16, 2011 12:25 IST

Arunima Sinha alias Sonu, the sportswoman, who lost her leg after being pushed from a moving train, was on Saturday shifted to a Lucknow hospital for further treatment, a senior health department officer said.

"Sonu has been shifted to Chattrapati Shahuji Maharaj Medical University on Saturday morning for an artificial limb as the facility was not available in Bareilly," Chief Medical Superintendent of district hospital Vijay Yadav said.

Sonu was undergoing treatment at Bareilly district hospital from April 12 and her condition is stable, he said.

Sonu, a national-level volleyball player of Uttar Pradesh, was pushed out of the Padmavat Express in Bareilly on April 11 night by three men trying to snatch her gold chain.

The 23-year-old athlete lost her left leg in the incident. The incident took place between Chenati and Bareilly railway stations when Arunima was travelling to Gautam Buddha Nagar to appear in a CISF recruitment examination.

The police had lodged an FIR under section 307 (attempt to murder) and 393 (attempt to loot) against unidentified youths in this connection.
