Parliament on Monday passed a bill giving Hindu women equal rights in inheritance of property, with Lok Sabha approving the legislation by a voice vote.

Rajya Sabha passed the Hindu Succession (Amendment) Bill, 2005 on August 16. Winding up a brief discussion on the Bill, Law and Justice Minister H R Bhardwaj said it would remove gender bias by giving equal rights to daughters as sons have.

He said since rights over agricultural land were part of the State subject, the Centre would soon write to state governments in its endeavour to bring a consensus on the matter. Lauding the unanimous support extended by members cutting across party lines, the minister said the bill would give due place to women in the society and family.

He also said efforts were on to evolve a consensus on the Women's Reservation Bill.

The Lok Sabha also passed after brief discussions, the Displaced Persons Claims and Other Laws Repeal Bill, 2005 and the Immigration (Carriers' Liability) Amendment Bill, 2005 by voice vote.

Both these Bills have already been passed by Rajya Sabha.
