The formation of Telangana state appears to be heading towards reality and the talk is that Congress president Sonia Gandhi has cleared it. Congress sources tell rediff.com that all through the meeting Sonia was inclined towards the formation of Telangana and she had expressed the same.
There were heated debates; capital sharing being the major issue. Although Telangana leaders agreed to share the capital for five years, those from Seema-Andhra said that they would prefer to build their own capital over the next two years.
However they also sought a 1.5 lakh crore package from the Centre to build the region. Although, the proposal to form the state has reportedly been cleared by Sonia, there are still some issues that are being debated.
The inclusion of two districts from Rayalseema in the proposed state has not been decided yet. The Congress is expected to take a decision on that front soon.
Congress sources say that all decks have been cleared and the home ministry too is prepared. The process is likely to take 90 days to clear, and the Congress wishes to hurry it up. The bill needs to be passed with a simple majority in both houses before it could get the presidential assent.
