The Nominations...

Person Nominated : Dr. V. Krishnamurthy

Reasons : Although it has been four years since Dr. Krishnamurthy was accused as a corrupt politician and a few years more since he revitalized the very paradigm of public sector management in his tenure at SAIL, Maruti and BHEL, I would still consider hi m worthy of 1996's honour. Coming from a very humble background, Dr. Krishnamurthy rose to the helm of some of India's largest public sector companies, invariably turning to abject failures into unprecedented successes. After he resigned from the planning commission in 1992, he was wrongfully accused of corruption and abuse of power - over the next few years, he was subjected to humiliation and character bashing that no honest man, and certainly a not a technocrat of his statures, could deserve. Yet, four years later, his ideas are more paramount than ever. His concept of management and economic liberalization have provided the basis for India's recent economic advances as well as the success of the company he formerly managed! , SAIL. Having left the public sector, the companies that he now manages are at the forefront of India's economic revolution.

Indeed, perhaps no longer as publicly visible as before, Dr. Krishnamurthy's visionary ideas are taking a greater hold than ever. It is truly for this silent contribution to the future of India, I nominate Dr. Krishnamurthy for person of the year.

Person Nominated : The Common Man

Reasons : Clearly, amidst our problems and lost opportunities, no one is more deserving of this award than the common man on the street or village, miilions of whom over generations have wasted away their lives, thanks to the lack of vision and pettiness of the minority that has power.
