Date sent: Thu, 12 Dec 1996 10:50:12 -0800 (PST)

Person Nominated : Mohd. Azharudhin

Reasons : Look at his after captaincy period. He was given a place, just because he is an experienced player. When his place was in danger and the pundits thought he lost his rhythm, a face-saving innings from Calcutta and the match-saving innings from Kanpur came from him JUST for the team against the so-called #1 team in the test match playing countries. He not only proved that a single man can stop the unbeatable team and also retain the India's not-losing record in the home.

Person Nominated : P.V. Narsimha Rao

Reasons : I would like to give credit to a person who served India as a PM for 5 years. India was at a state where every 6 months there was a new PM. He besides providing stability, somehow came through tough situations like Babri Masjid. Besides his(At least they were implemented when he was in office) economic reforms were very much welcome to India. He seems to have got caught in a lot of scandals, but which PM didnt????

Date sent: Fri, 13 Dec 1996 05:14:02 -0500

Person Nominated : T. N. Seshan

Reasons : It has long been said that it is difficult to take on a corrupt system. The theory was it was impossible for an individual to change the system. Mr. T. N. Seshan proved otherwise. He is one individual who has made all the difference. Note that his efforts to cleanse the electoral system was initiated before the advent of judicial activism. Perhaps the judges themselves took cue from Seshan's actions. Though controversial Seshan has brought about a chnage in peoples attitude towards corruption and reinforced their belief in electoral process. The 1996 general elections stand as testimony as proof of sucess of Seshans efforts to cleanse a corrupt process. Hats off to Mr. Seshan

Reasons : Well, it wouldn't be Mani Shankar Aiyar, because he calls his voters petty, that also rules out anybody from the chattering class. Plus if anybody bore the year well, it was this great guy.

Vote for The Common Man.
