When it comes to entertainment, Bollywood rules.

However, there are a few exceptions. Take reality shows, for instance. Shows like Bigg Boss, Kaun Banega Crorepati continue to hold our attention for various reasons. And if there is controversy surrounding the show, it gets even better.

Speaking of controversies, the year saw its fair share both onscreen and off it. Here's a look at the top newsmakers in the world of TV.

Rakhi Sawant

Rakhi Sawant and controversies are inseparable.

This year, the item girl was in the news when a man from Uttar Pradesh committed suicide following her humiliating comments on her reality show Rakhi Ka Insaaf.

The dead man's mother lodged an FIR accusing Rakhi of instigating her son to commit suicide by calling him naamard.

In her defense, Rakhi said she watched the show several times and did not see anything that could instigate a person to commit suicide.

The show also received many complaints from viewers about indecent content, which prompted the information and broadcasting ministry to ask the channel to air the show only between 11 pm to 5 am.

But Rakhi feels her fans will watch her on television any time of the day.

Dolly Bindra

Loud mouth Dolly Bindra generated maximum TRPs for Bigg Boss 4.

She abused her fellow housemates in the most foulest of languages and picked up fights with almost everyone in the house. All of which made for a very riveting watch.

Ultimately it was a tiff she had with Samir Soni over hitting Shweta Tiwari, which escalated into a huge fight and resulted in the eviction of both the housemates.

Samir returned to the house within couple of days while Dolly made a wildcard entry into the house with public votes after a week.

Shweta, who couldn't bear the sight of Dolly, graciously accepted the apology and forgave her.

Though Dolly has toned down the abuse, all eyes are on her as she makes her next move.

Rahul Mahajan

Like Rakhi, Rahul Mahajan, son of late BJP leader Pramod Mahajan, is no stranger to controversies.

Thrown out from Bigg Boss last year for violating the rules of the house, Rahul decided to get back on TV with the reality show Rahul Dulhaniya Le Jayega earlier this year. His bride turned out to be Kolkata model Dimpy Ganguly.

Months later, Dimpy walked out of the marriage accusing Rahul of domestic violence. He was earlier accused of domestic violence by his first wife Shweta Singh.

Dimpy claimed that Rahul punched and kicked her after being unable to read a message on her phone. However, Rahul denied the allegations. She also alleged that during another fight, he had pointed a gun at her.

Dimpy left his place after swearing never to return. But she returned after he apologised.

Ali Merchant and Sara Khan

When Ali Merchant and Sara Khan decided to get married on Bigg Boss 4, people termed it a publicity stunt.

The ironic part was that it was Sara's father who blew the whistle on the couple when he came to know of the proposed marriage on TV.

Sara was one of the contestants of the house while Ali went inside as a guest for few days. Bigg Boss decided to get them married on the show.

Criticising the move, Sara's father claimed that couple had married a year ago in Bhopal. He also produced nikahnama before the media as evidence. The Qazi, who had performed the marriage ceremony, said that the second marriage is against Islam.

Sara's family members were miffed that Ali decided to go ahead with the wedding despite knowing that her grandmother has passed away recently, which the actress was unaware of. However, Ali Merchant's father denied wedding claims and said that there is no registration of their wedding.

After coming out the house, Ali and Sara claimed that the photographs which were shown to the media were of their engagement. He also denied that they were paid to get married on the show and the wedding was not fake.

There are reports that the couple is planning a grand reception on January 15 outside Bigg Boss house after the finale.

Raja Chaudhary

Reality show contestant and Bhojpuri actor Raja Chaudhary earned the notorious reputation of being a 'woman beater' after abusing his ex-wife actress Shweta Tiwari, and most recently his girlfriend Shraddha Sharma.

Recently after Shweta entered Bigg Boss 4, Raja had an argument with Shweta's boyfriend (Abhinav Kohli) over his visitation rights. The court allows him to meet his daughter on Sundays between 11 and 1 pm. When Shweta's friend refused to let him meet his daughter, Raja lost his cool and slapped him.

Soon after, Raja made headlines again when he allegedly bashed up his girlfriend. But Raja said that the matter was blown out of proportion. In fact, he said she had hit him as well and had the marks to prove it.

Hardly had the matter died down, that Raja was in the news again. This time it was Priyadarshini Singh (one of the prospective brides of Rahul Dulhaniya Le Jaayega and a participant on Imagine's new reality show Wipe Out), who slapped Raja in public.

Raja was apparently drunk and was constantly passing comments at the female contestants. When he tried the same with Priyadarshini, there was a heated argument and she slapped Raja.
