An Onam without any films of Mohanlal and Mammootty is like an Onam without a proper Onasadya. But that is how this year's Onam is going to be like.

For the first time, a Jayaram film (Kana Kanmani) has become the biggest Onam release. Young actor Jayasurya's Onam release also is much talked ou because there are no films from the biggest super stars of Malayalam cinema.

Jayasurya's Onam release is Oru Black & White Kudumbam directed by Shyju Anthikkad. Bhama and Vinayaprasad play the female leads and Kalabhavan Mani is Jayasurya's father.

"Antony (Kalabhavan Mani), a hard working farmer and Lakshmi Thampuratty (Vinaya Prasad) have a son called Antony Aditya Varma (Jayasurya). They are called a Black & White family since the father is dark skinned while his wife and son are fair.

"They are a close-knit family and the son, who had completed his MBA, dreams of working in Australia. But after being caught in a trap, their lives change forever," says director Shyju, who was part of the erstwhile Shyju-Shaji duo that made Shakespeare MA (Malayalam) last year.

About the seperation, he said, "We had decided to team up for just one film and from now on we will do films separately."

According to Jayasurya, "My character in Oru Black & White Kudumbam is that of a highly ambitious youth. He faces some unexpected setbacks in his plans to fly abroad for a job and as a result he lands up in a job at the Minnu group of companies. He has a chance meeting with Minnu (Bhama), but doesn't know that she is the owner of the company. The story goes through several interesting moments."

The young hero has struck gold with the success of his recent film Saji Surendran's Ivar Vivahitharayal. He is now acting in VK Prakash's Gulumaal-The Escape, Ramakanth Sarju's Utharaswayamvaram and also in Joshiy's Robin Hood.

Bhama is playing Minnu, scion of a rich business group. She has the last word in all the decisions that are being taken in her house. Minnu is very serious by nature.

Bhama, who played Jayasurya's wife in Ivar Vivahitharayal, is happy about her role in Oru Black & White Kudumbam. "My character, Minnu, is serious from the age of 12, when her mother passed away. Her father Ananda Varma (Lalu Alex) listens to her before taking every crucial business decision," smiles the beautiful Bhama.

The director explains that Oru Black & White Kudumbam is being narrated on a humorous note and has several characters that are absolutely funny. Like for instance "Mono" Varma, played by Janaradhanan, who is devoid of a "stereo effect" as his left ear is not functional. The film's "funny" cast also includes Suraj Venjarammood, Bijukkuttan and Anoop Chandran.

Oru Black & White Kudumbam is being produced by M Mani under the banner of Sunitha Productions. Pradeepkumar Kavumthara, a well known name in the theatre circuit for more than two decades, makes his entry into films writing the screenplay and dialogues for the film. The cinematographer is Jibu Jacob and the music director is Alex Paul.
