And the Best Break-Up Oscar goes to?

It's a bizarre question to ask, but now that we see Kate Winslet split from her director husband Sam Mendes just a year after she won the Oscar, and rumours of Sandra Bullock's marriage ending the same way, maybe its time to look at the trend.

Here's a look at a few leading ladies whose married lives changed after their Oscars:

Julia Roberts

When Roberts won her long-awaited 2001 Oscar for Erin Brockovich, she'd been dating actor Benjamin Bratt for around three years.

It took roughly three post-Oscar months for Roberts to dump Bratt and hook up with cameraman Daniel Moder, who she later married.

Halle Berry

Berry married Eric Benet the year her film Monster's Ball was released.

As the film's celebrity grew and Berry became the first black woman to hold the Oscar statuette for Best Actress, her marriage deteriorated and less than a year since she cried on stage, her marriage was over.

Nicole Kidman

It isn't too much of a stretch to believe that Tom Cruise has supernatural powers, and the diminutive megastar divorced his wife Nicole while she was still acting in The Hours, for which she won her Best Actress Oscar in 2002.

Who's afraid of Virginia Woolf? Perhaps scientologists.

Charlize Theron

Theron and Irish actor Stuart Townsend have been more than merry as a couple for a number of years now, but the Monster actress apparently couldn't stomach it for too much longer and split up with him recently.

Hilary Swank

Hilary Swank won Oscars in both 2004 and 2006, and while she forgot to mention husband Chad Lowe the first time, she singled him out during her second win, for Million Dollar Baby.

She also thanked her agent John Campisi, which ought to have been a bit of a warning for Lowe, because she switched to Campisi a few months after boxing her way to the top.

Reese Witherspoon

Her marriage with Ryan Philippe was the stuff of tween legend, and the chirpy actress and the pretty actor managed to keep family and life afloat for many a year.

Until, that is, the actress won her Oscar for Walk The Line, after which things just fell apart.

Kate Winslet

It is said that Kate and top director Sam Mendes split up after making Revolutionary Road, a film about a failing marriage.

The couple married in 2003 and seemed smitten since, but when she (finally!) won her Oscar last year for The Reader, the man she said she loved in her acceptance speech was her father.

Sam and she separated barely a week ago, and the actress seems set on divorce.
