Mission 2007: Technology for rural India

The motto of Mission 2007 is Every Village, a Knowledge Centre. Mission 2007 is a nation-wide initiative launched in New Delhi in July 2004, with the aim of setting up of knowledge centres in 600,000 villages in India by 2007.

The beginning of Mission 2007 took place at the M S Swaminathan Research Foundation in Chennai on the death centenary of Jamshedji Tata. The death centenary of Jamshedji Tata was chosen because "he remains a role model as he achieved what he set out to do -- be it steel or textiles or hotel or building the Institute of Science, Bangalore."

A National Alliance under the chairmanship of Prof. M S Swaminathan was formed. In his words, the priority for Mission 2007 is "achieving sustainable human security. This will call for harmony with nature and with each other. Knowledge connectivity within and among countries will help to achieve this goal. This is why we should make 'Mission 2007: Every Village Knowledge Centre' a success."

The slide show covers some of the rural technology exhibits at the pavilions at the IIT, Madras.
