After burning up calories with an intense workout, you don't want to be stocking up on them again! Here are five foods that are best consumed post an exercise session.

If you get peckish after working up a sweat, read on -- these foods will have you feeling refreshed and avoid unnecessary weight gain!

Peanut butter

A peanut butter and wholegrain bread sandwich is a good post workout snack -- it helps fuel up and aids in muscles recovery, as it contains protein, carbs and healthy fats.

The wholegrain bread contains complex carbohydrates that really fill you up, giving you slow-burning energy for the rest of your day. Peanut butter is rich in Vitamin E, magnesium, folate and fibre.

Oats are rich in fibre and low on the glycemic index. Thus the carbohydrate content or sugar is released gradually into your bloodstream, keeping you energetic for a couple of hours.

Oatmeal is also a good source of B vitamins, which help lower stress and are vital in converting carbs into energy.
