Get Ahead reader Daya Kudari reviews BlackBerry's recent launch BlackBerry Bold 9900 in response to our reader invite (below).

Daya, 27, calls himself a 'so-so' engineer. He has a BTech in mechanical engineering. He is also a 'published author'.

"I am a published author (Friendship@facebook.com ISBN - 9788122311037 published 2010) but unfortunately my book didn't do well. I managed to appear on TV (Sam TV Marathi), Newspapers (DNA, Times of India) and Radio (All India Radio, Pune) because of the book, more so due to the subject of my book -- social networking," he wrote in his self-deprecatory mail about his introduction.

It's some time now that BlackBerry launched the all new Bold Touch aka BlackBerry Bold 9900 which is touted as the next version of 9780 model (Bold 3).

But does the new BlackBerry deliver the expectations which come with Rs 32,000?

The soul changes

BlackBerry OS 6.0 replaced by BlackBerry OS 7.0 makes a statement; play with Bold Touch for 10 minutes and you get the feel of a superior OS. Even the CPU migrates from the plain 624 MHz processor to the mighty 1.2 GHz QC 8655 processor, a worthy climb.

Technical specifications make a good shout

No doubt, technical specifications have improved wherein the internal memory storage is now 8 GB as against 256 MB for Bold 3. Also, the RAM hops from 512 MB to 786 MB.

Bigger and better display

In terms of display, the new Bold Touch comes with a supplementary angle of touch screen comfort. Other aspects include:

• Bigger 2.8-inch display against 2.44-inch for Bold 3
• An accelerometer sensor provides auto-rotate function
• Proximity sensor for auto turn-off

The thinner BlackBerry

The most important advantage in terms of handling is the reduction of width from 14 mm to 10.5 mm.
 
The camera aspects remain almost the same but oddly (this one comes with a 5 MP snapper), the thinner BlackBerry weighs more than its predecessor model (122 grams to 130 grams).
 
So, the question remains unanswered still: does Bold Touch offer a better scope than prior versions? A small yes and a big no.

Though it provides an enhanced performance, BlackBerry 9780 still holds ground against bigger rivals in the family.

BlackBerry 9780 owners shouldn't worry much as their pride still provides tough competition to most phones, apart from providing the BlackBerry triple advantage of sturdiness, one of the best interfaces and the class of BlackBerry.
 
Note: While writing this article, a second hand BlackBerry Bold 9780 still gets a prize north of Rs 10,000.
 
May be that is the reason, they say there are mobile phones and there are BlackBerry mobile phones.
