Poll: India's best Commerce colleges of 2011

Browse through the top 10 list of commerce colleges of 2011 and register your vote for the best commerce college in India.

The annual India Today survey results for the best colleges in the country for 2011 were declared last week. More than 1500 colleges had participated in the survey which ranked institutions stream-wise offering courses in arts, science, commerce, engineering, medicine and law.

The institutions were assessed for the following parameters:

  • Reputation
  • Academic Input
  • Student Care
  • Infrastructure
  • Placement
  • Perceptual Rank
  • Factual Rank

While the top five colleges remain the same as last year, this year's list features colleges like Shri Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics and RA Podar College of Commerce and Economics from Mumbai and Madras Christian College from Chennai.

1. Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi

Moving up from the second slot last year is Shri Ram College of Commerce, Delhi.

While the foundation for the college was laid down as early as 1920, the institute was affiliated to the Delhi University in 1926.

Also known as a constituent college of the University of Delhi was recently in the news for its 100% merit cut off. Needless to say, it is considered as one of the leading institutes for students pursuing Commerce and Economics in India.

Since 1933, SRCC started accepting female students, but it became truly co-educational only in 1957. SRCC also became the first College in the University to set up a girls' hostel in a non-exclusively women's college.

SRCC is also the only college in the North campus to have a swimming pool facility.

2. St. Xavier's College, Kolkata

Sliding down from its top slot last year is St. Xavier's College, Kolkata.

Named after St. Francis Xavier, a Jesuit saint of the 16th century, who travelled to India, St. Xavier's College was founded in 1860 with just 40 students.

It is an autonomous college affiliated to the University of Calcutta.

After gaining autonomous status in July 2006, it also came to be known as the first autonomous college of West Bengal, India.

The College offers UG and PG Courses under five faculties, namely Arts, Science, Commerce, Business Administration and Education and as of 2010, has close to 6000 students under its roll.

The college also owns the credit for having a commemorative stamp depicting the college campus issued by the Indian Post in its name.

3. Loyola College, Chennai

On third spot is Loyola College, Chennai

Founded in 1925, it is one of the oldest colleges in the city and is known for its high academic standards and quality education in the city.

Although the college continues to be affiliated to the University of Madras, it functions as an autonomous body since July 1978.

It has a 100-acre campus and is conveniently located in the heart of the city.

There are 18 departments (for Arts, Commerce and Science) and 9 special Institutes offering more than 111 programs to over 10,000 students. It has 10 departments offering M.Phil programs and 14 departments that offer Ph.D programs.

Out of 277 faculty members, over 114 hold doctoral degree.

4. Lady Shri Ram College for Women, Delhi

Staying put on its fourth position is Lady Shri Ram College for Women, Delhi.

When it was established in 1956 by the late Sir Shri Ram in memory of his wife, the college had 243 students, 9 faculty members, 4 support staff and 3 distinct courses of study.

However, it had a strong aim, to provide access to higher education of women.

Today with over 2000 students pursuing 16 courses of study, the commerce programme is well equipped by an able staff, besides an exhaustive library, hostel facilities and a number of other student friendly resources.

5. Christ College, Bangalore

Maintaining the fifth spot is Christ College, Bangalore.

Also known as Christ University, the Christ College, established in July 1969, has the rare distinction to be the first institution in Karnataka to be accredited by National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) UGC for providing quality education.

Spread over a 25 acre campus, the Christ University was granted the deemed university status in 2008.

Today, the college offers courses in Science, Law, Business Administration, Commerce, Management, Humanities, and Social Sciences.

Among the professional ones, it offers courses in Business Management, Computer Application, Hotel Management, Mass Communication, Social Work, Engineering and Tourism.

6. NM College of Commerce and Economics, Mumbai

From being twelfth on the list last year, Shri Narsee Monjee College of Commerce and Economics, Mumbai makes it significantly to the sixth position this year.

Also popularly known as NM college, it was established in 1964.

It is known for its courses in commerce and economic studies.

The college is also well known among students for its disciplinary policies, one of which being that a student has to compulsorily opt for Mathematics as a subject in their first year of junior college.

7. Symbiosis College of Arts and Commerce, Pune

On seventh place this year is Symbiosis Society's College of Arts & Commerce, Pune

The Symbiosis College of Arts & Commerce was founded in 1983, as one of the many branches of the Symbiosis Society.

The college was formed with the aim of taking care of international students studying in India and to provide them with a 'home away from home'.

Currently, as a multi cultural campus, they claim to have students from approximately 36 Afro-Asian countries and from almost all the states of India.

The commerce faculty alone has 10 departments of study.

8. R A Podar College of Commerce and Economics, Mumbai

Making considering progress from its fourteenth position last year is R A Podar College of Commerce and Economics, Mumbai.

When the college came into being on February 7, 1941, it had 150 students.

The college was first named as Ramniranjan Anandilal Podar College of Commerce.

In 1942, after the institution started its first Degree course in Commerce, the word Economics was added. It thus became 'Ramniranjan Anandilal Podar College of Commerce and Economics'.

It currently offers eight academic programmes which includes four undergraduate programmes in Accountancy; Business Management, Vocational Course, BMS and three post graduate programmes, viz Management, Accountancy and DMS.

9. Madras Christian College, Chennai

Madras Christian College, Chennai may have missed being in the top 10 list last year, but this year, it occupies the eighth position.

Founded in 1837, Madras Christian College, also known as MCC is interestingly one of Asia's oldest functional colleges.

In 1978, when it gained autonomy, it was one of the first colleges in India to be granted Autonomy.

The college has over 30 academic departments including day and evening courses offering undergraduate and post graduate studies, with over 5,000 students under its roll.

The 365-acre campus is distinguished by a lake and is well known for its flora and fauna, deer and trees.

10. Hansraj College, Delhi

Sliding below four positions from last year, is Hansraj College, Delhi.

The college came into being on July 1948, with student strength of 313 members.

Hansraj College is known for its infrastructure- namely, large classrooms, extensive collection of books in the library aided by a book bank, computer labs. It also boasts of a sports complex, an air conditioned electronic shooting range, well-equipped science laboratories, and hostel facilities among others.

It has nearly 15 academic departments and faculty of 85 members and caters to over 3700 students annually.
