India's bowlers took a beating and pacer Ishant Sharma failed to complete six overs as a Cricket Australia Chairman's XI  rattled up 398 for six declared on the first day of the tourists' opening match in Australia on Thursday.

India won the toss and chose to bowl first in the two-day tour match at Manuka Oval, one of two warm-up matches they will play in the Australian capital before the first of four Tests starts on December 26 at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Opener Wes Robinson smashed 143, but South Australia's Tom Cooper, who has played for the Netherlands in One-day internationals, bettered that with a brutal unbeaten 182 off 194 balls with 24 fours and three sixes. The pair shared a partnership of 226.

Robinson played a patient knock that came off 215 deliveries

Cooper was more attacking and scored at almost run-a-ball during his 192-ball knock.

While Robinson's innings included 13 fours and half a dozen sixes, Cooper sent down a whopping 24 boundaries and three maximum hits.

Robinson's marathon knock was ended by Ojha, who was otherwise taken to the cleaners during his 25.3 overs that yielded 149 runs for the opposition batsmen.

The left-hander holed out to Sachin Tendulkar on the leg-side while attempting to slam Ojha for a boundary.

Left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha proved costly, taking two wickets for 149.

Right-arm paceman Umesh Yadav, who impressed in his first Test series against West Indies last month, however, fared better, taking three wickets at a cost of 39 runs.
