Ganguly defers departure for Kanpur

November 17, 2004 21:21 IST

Indian skipper Sourav Ganguly, on Wednesday, deferred his departure for Kanpur for the first Test against South Africa till Thursday, apparently to follow up his appeal to the International Cricket Council against the two-Test ban.

ICC suspends ban on Ganguly

''Ganguly is likely to send a letter to the ICC seeking more details on the punitive action taken by match referee Clive Lloyd. He will also furnish details on how the time was lost during the Pakistan innings due to the dew factor and ground condition,'' a BCCI source said.

The source said that Ganguly would point out that the delay was a result of the time lost and not 'time wasted intentionally', the source said.

''Due to the dew factor the ball became moist and had to be changed five times. Then there were the injuries to Salman Butt and Rahul Dravid,'' the source said.

Ganguly had been served the ban by match referee Lloyd for the slow over rate of the Indian team in the Pakistan innings during Saturday's platinum jubilee match.

After Ganguly exercised his right of appeal against the decision, the ICC appointed leading New Zealand barrister Tim Castle as Appeals Commissioner on Tuesday.
