Pietermaritzburg Oval, Pietermaritzburg

PietermaritzburgPietermaritzburg is the administrative centre of KwaZulu-Natal, sharing the function of a capital with Ulundi, the centre of the former Zulu homeland.

When the Voortrekkers reached the fertile hills at the Msindusi river they decided to lay out the capital of their republic of "Natalia" here. They named the settlement after their first trek leaders Pieter Retief and Gerrit Maritz.

Six years later, the British took the town over and erected their colossal administration centre for the province of Natal. The British influence is visible everywhere in town, especially in the grand colonial buildings from the Edwardian and the Victorian era. Pietermaritzburg is said to be -- like the whole of Natal -- the "last outpost of the British Empire".
