Wednesday's game will be England's 13th against an African side, having previously won nine and drawn three. Their only previous match against Nigeria was a 1-0 friendly win at Wembley in 1994.
However, England were seconds away from suffering a historic defeat to Cameroon in a pre-World Cup friendly in Kobe on May 26, trailing 2-1 before an injury-time header by substitute Robbie Fowler secured a 2-2 draw.
In World Cups, England have won three and drawn one of their four games against African opposition, including a memorable 3-2 extra-time victory over Cameroon in the 1990 quarter-finals.
