Gurmeet Kaur out of women's javelin

The Rediff Team

India's Gurmeet Kaur failed to qualify in the first round of the women's javelin throw event at Stadium Australia on Friday morning.

The Indian, throwing in Group A, finished 17th in a group of 18, just ahead of Tatyana Sudarikova of Kyrgystan. Kaur's first throw of 52.78 was in fact her best throw -- peculiarly, while most javelin throwers use the first throw to land a good legal one, and then look to improve, Kaur's throwing deteriorated after that first throw, registering 48.80 and 46.46 in her next two throws.

Germany's Steffi Nerius (65.76), Trine Hattestad of Norway (65.44) and Mirella Maniani-Tzelili of Greece (63.34) each took just one throw to qualify for the finals, and walked off.
