Moderate quake rocks A&N, Chennai

An earthquake measuring 6.5 on the Richter scale rocked the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and parts of Chennai on Monday.

The tremor was recorded at 0947 IST off the west coast of Great Nicobar Islands, the meteorological department said in New Delhi.

It was one of the strongest aftershocks since the December 26 earthquake that triggered the tsunami

People living in high-rises in parts of north Chennai rushed out of their apartments after they felt the tremor.

Since December 26, over a hundred aftershocks have rocked the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and surrounding regions, but only a few measured more than 6.

Chennai has recorded two aftershocks in the same period.
