The US President applauded French President Nicolas Sarkozy for pledging to send more troops to Afghanistan and for hosting a donors' conference that yielded $20 billion (about Rs 80,000 crore) for rebuilding the war-battered country.

Bush and his wife Laura later dined with the French president and his wife Carla Bruni.

The following day, Bush visited an American cemetery and memorial for World War I and World War II combatants before touring the fort at Mont Valerien (in picture), west of Paris, where more than 1,000 French resistance fighters were executed by German troops.
