These women run their countries

Angela Merkel

Dr Angela Dorothea Merkel is the current Chancellor of Germany and chairwoman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU). She also leads a coalition with the Christian Social Union (CSU) and Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD).

Born in 1954, Merkel is the first female Chancellor of Germany. She is also the first woman to lead Germany since it became a nation state in 1871.

Her entrance into politics came soon after the fall of the Berlin Wall. In 1989, she joined Demokratischer Aufbruch, which was then a new party. Now, some people in her country refer to her as 'Iron Lady', comparing her to Margaret Thatcher.
