In memoriam: Kocheril Raman Narayanan

Following his stint in journalism, Narayanan went to England in 1945 and studied political science under the famous Harold Laski at the London School of Economics. He was awarded a B.Sc. honours degree in economics, with a specialisation in political science.

He joined the Indian Foreign Service in 1949, serving in Indian embassies in places like Tokyo, London and Canberra. He also held a number of positions in the Ministry of External Affairs. After retiring from the Foreign Service in 1978, he was appointed Vice-Chancellor of Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. To cut a long story short, Narayanan entered politics in 1984, winning three successive General Elections from his constituency of Ottapalam, Kerala.

Several Ministry portfolios later, he was sworn in as President by Chief Justice J S Verma in the Central Hall of Parliament.
