Salem and his girlfriend Monica Bedi were arrested on September 21, 2002 in Lisbon for entering Portugal on forged documents.
A Portuguese court recently permitted Salem's extradition to India to face trial in crimes from forging passports and cases of extortion to being a participant in the 1993 Mumbai bomb blasts.
India has assured the Portuguese government that Salem would not be awarded the death sentence if he is found guilty in any of these cases.
