Muslims roundly condemn attack
on Swaminarayan temple

Muslim leaders in Gujarat on Tuesday spoke out in one voice condemning the terrorist strike at the Akshardham temple complex of the Swaminarayan sect in Gandhinagar and killing of innocent people terming them as an attack on humanity.

Muslim leaders from south Gujarat, including GPCC vice-president Kadir Pirzada and Congress councillor in the Surat Municipal Corporation Iqbal Malik, strongly termed the incident as an attack on humanity.

A report from Surat said police intensified patrolling in the region to maintain communal harmony in the wake of the attack on the temple.

The Shahi Imam of Delhi's historic Jama Masjid Syed Ahmed Bukhari termed the attack as 'anti-Islamic' but said the post-Godhra violence in Gujarat and Chief Minister Narendra Modi's 'Gaurav Yatra' could have provoked it.

"Islam does not permit killing of innocent civilians. I appeal to Muslims and our Hindu brethren to join hands to wipe out terrorism from the country's soil," Bukhari told PTI.

Condemning the attack as a 'conspiracy to defame Islam and Muslims', president of the All India Organisation of Imams (priests) of Mosques, Maulana Jameel Illyasi, demanded stern action against the culprits.

"The attack is against the teachings of Islam and this kind of anarchy is unacceptable to Indian Muslims," he said.

Appealing to all people believing in secular values to exercise restraint and unite, president of the Sanatan Sanskriti Sansthan, Jagjiwan Bakshi said, "Peace should prevail at all costs."
