Kalam picks Gujarat for his first official visit

Among the highlights will be a visit to Mahatma Gandhi's Sabarmati Ashram, near Ahmedabad, 'since Gandhiji had been his inspiration from his school days', according to a Rashtrapati Bhavan release.

It said Kalam would also use this opportunity to get an idea of the rehabilitation measures undertaken by the Gujarat government and NGOs for riot victims.

He will meet intellectuals, political leaders, technologists and industrialists besides visiting the house of noted scientist Vikram Sarabhai, 'his respected Guru and a great visionary', in Ahmedabad, it said.

During his 24-hour visit to Ahmedabad and Bhuj from the afternoon of August 12, the President will also interact with some students, it said.

In Kutch, the President will assess the progress of relief work among earthquake victims as he has been closely associated with certain relief activities since the killer quake struck Bhuj and adjoining places on January 26 last year, it said.
