R-Day function sees khaki, no locals, in Srinagar

Mukhtar Ahmad in Srinagar

The Republic Day function at Bakshi stadium in Srinagar passed off peacefully under tight security on Friday morning.

The minister for public works, Ali Mohammad Sagar, hoisted the national flag in the stadium which was deserted barring jawans and security forces.

Sagar later addressed the men in uniform and said, "Militancy has brought death and destruction to the state." He said his government was not against holding talks with separatists but added that the state's accession to India was final.

Meanwhile, the Republic Day function at various other district headquarters in the snowbound valley passed off peacefully. In Jammu, the function was held under tight security at the Maulana Azad stadium.

Meanwhile, three rifle grenades were fired in north Baramullah on Friday morning, injuring two jawans.
