Rao 'fails' to keep date with film unit
Kamla Bora in JaipurFormer prime minister P V Narasimha Rao today 'failed' to keep his date with a film unit which is shooting a real-life story of a mass- rape victim in Jaipur. Vinod Doshi and Gorang Doshi, producers of Bavander (the sand storm), announced last week that Rao would be arriving in Jaipur on Monday for shooting a scene which showed the presentation of a bravery award to the female protagonist by the country's prime minister. However, inquiries by a private television channel in Delhi with Rao's office revealed that the former prime minister gave no such commitment. The producers did make such a request to Rao, but the latter did not give any positive response. The film, directed by Jagmohan Mundara, revolves around Bhanwari Devi (played by actress Nandita Das), a village social worker who was gang- raped in Bhateri in Sikar district in September 1992. She fights for justice with the help of a social activist, played by another versatile actress Deepti Naval. Actor Raghu Yadav plays the male lead in the film. However, in real life, Bhanwari Devi did not receive any award from the prime minister. She was only paid cash relief from the Prime Minister's Relief Fund in June 1993. Meanwhile, some women's group in Jaipur are not happy with the making of the film. They feel that the film could adversely affect their case against the rape accused in the Rajasthan high court which is hearing the state government's appeal against the acquittal of the accused by a lower court. According to the prosecution, Bhanwari Devi has been fighting against social evils like child marriages and had stopped many such illegal marriages. Infuriated by her campaign, ''some upper caste men had gang-raped her''. |
