E-Mail this report to a friend

The situation in Sira town in Tumkur district of Karnataka, which witnessed large-scale violence yesterday, was peaceful, top police sources said today.

The sources said though tension prevailed in some parts of the town, no fresh incidents were reported.

Prohibitory orders were in force in the town.

State director general of police Srinivasulu was camping in the town.

Five farmers were killed in police firing and a circle inspector was stabbed to death by an irate mob following widespread protest against the sudden slump in prices of groundnut in the local market.

Chief Minister J H Patel, on his return from New Delhi late last night, had said that he would order a judicial probe into the violent incidents.

Minister of state for labour B Satyanarayana, who represents the constituency, had resigned from the J H Patel ministry and also from the membership of the assembly, blaming the local leaders of Congress and the Lok Shakthi for the incident.
