'I was born to be a very passionate actor'

You have something unique in Evam, a theatre group. Still you act in films. What are films to you?

There are two aspects of my being. One is the young entrepreneur who wants to do something like what Mani Sir did with Madras Talkies; have your own production outfit, have youngsters fuel that and make a difference to the world by telling your own stories. But I was born to be a very passionate actor. That is the space where I pamper myself. That is why I want to be in films.

But you produce plays and act in them too. What is the difference between acting in the plays of Evam and in films?

Seventy per cent of the plays of Evam are directed by me and Sunil. So, acting for Evam is not an outlet as an actor for me. When you cast yourself as an actor, you don't really push yourself that much. It is not a space you can experiment and create more.

It's not like when you are being directed. There you are pushed as an actor because you are delivering the specifications of another person’s creative vision. That is what the true test is for an actor.
