The US-returned Mapillai of Tamil cinema

Karthik Kumar is Tamil cinema's one and only "US-returned Mapillai (son-in-law)" ever since Mani Ratnam cast him as one in Alai Paayuthe.

This engineer (he also holds a MBA from MICA)-turned actor has been trying to come out of the tag for quite some time but with little success.

P C Sreeram cast him as the hero of his directorial venture Vaanam Vaasapadum, the first digital film in India but the film was a failure at the box office. Though Priya’s Kanda Naal Mudhal was a success, he was once again a US- returned Mapillai in the film.

Fortunately for him, the unprecedented success of Poi Solla Porom, produced by Priyadarshan and UTV has made him a middle class guy with dreams of going to the US rather than a US-returned guy.

Karthik can take pride in the fact that he along with his friend Sunil, is instrumental in bringing English theatre to the forefront in Chennai through their group Evam. Today, Evam has its presence not only in Chennai but also in many other parts of India.

In this interview, he talks about Poi Solla Porom and his plans for Evam.
