The cinematographer of Jhoom Barabar Jhoom, Tashan and now Dostana, Ayananka Bose, is a school topper who wanted to get into BITS Pilani, but got admitted to Chennai Film School instead.
A camera person who does not believe in preparing his shots in advance, Bose let's life takes it's own course.
In a free wheeling chat with Komal Mehta, Bose talks about Dostana and how he made the stars of the film look amazing. Excerpts:
What got you interested in cinematography?
I got into cinematography thanks to my dad who is from the sound fraternity (sound technician). I had the usual option of being a doctor or engineer but my dad suggested that if I wanted to check out cinematography I could do so at his friend, Rajiv Menon's place. I was an apprentice and after school I used to hang around there. And it was there that you could say that the bug bit me and from there onwards I decided that this is going to be it.
While studying at the film school I made very good use of the facility. It's a 3-year course. When I was in my second year, Rajiv Menon made a film with Aishwariya Rai and Tabu (Kandukonden Kandukonden). I worked as an assistant director on that film while Ravi K Chandran was the camera man. I approached Ravi sir and he took me on. Ravi K is my guru and he is awesome. Whatever I am today and whatever I've learnt is because of him.
