The hero who lives in the colony does not have any particular name. His mother, a prostitute who ended her life when he was just a little boy, was called mulla (jasmine) as she always wore a bunch of jasmine flowers in her hair.
As he grows up, the little boy is referred to as Mulla's son, which later becomes his name.
Young Mulla, who never got to go to school soon finds his soulmate, a young girl called Lachi, on a train. From thereon several incidents occur which have an impact on the young man's life.
