This film is directed by Himanshu Brahmbhatt. Why didn't you direct this film?

I was not meant to direct it. It was to be directed by Aayush Raina, who had directed a music video for Paap. But he is an ad filmmaker. When we were about to shoot, we realised what a big task it would be and he developed cold feet. He stepped out of the project.

I could have stepped in then. I knew the script better than anyone else. But I did not want to. I didn't want people to think that I ousted a director and replaced him.

Himanshu Brahmbhatt has been very close to our family. He was the chief assistant director in my first film, Daddy.

He met me last year and said he wanted to make a film. He has Sadak sensibilities; he's not the Dil Hai Ki Manta Nahin type. He is a frontbencher at heart. He said he did not want to make a serious film, not an art film, and does not want to win awards. So we thought Rog would interest him.

He said Rog had all the elements that attracted him. That was the biggest compliment for me. I don't want to make a cerebral film. If Himanshu liked it, others may like it too. He's a very basic guy -- watches movies only in stalls, never balcony, speaks Hindi only, and does not want to even learn English.

He was glad that Irrfan was playing the title role. He said Page 3 people weren't his world, the middle class people were.

We shot in old bungalows in Mumbai, on a budget. Rog is an indoor film. What art directors get paid for in other films is my film's entire budget! Yet, we have managed to make it look decent. That's the challenge in my films.
