The highlight of the evening, of course, was the fact that MTV brought India face to face with singer-songwriter, Alanis Morissette.

With all the angst of a Kurt Cobain, coupled with lyrical coherence and great intelligence of lyric, Alanis changed the soundscape forever with her fabulous Jagged little pill. Now, almost ten years after that seminal 1995 album, Morissette is wowing fans with her latest release, So called chaos.

Her set at the Immies included brilliantly rendered acoustic versions of her most memorable hit, Ironic -- a track which lyrically talks about being anything but what it claims to be, and hence makes converse sense -- and Thank you, from Supposed Former Infatuation Junkie, a track she just "had to sing" here because she thanks India in the song.

Here are some snippets of Alanis-speak I gathered when in front of the Rock legend in the media room. She wore a black vest, a netted top over it, black trousers, and a massive grin.

"It's a pleasure and a thrill to finally perform in India. Indian music has always been an influence to my music; it's in my bones. The East has always influenced Rock, I think."

"Most of my music is autobiographical; I just don't feel writing fictional lyrics is good for the integrity of the song. It's an intense personal process for me. I think all passion is good for music, but anger is just easier to channel. It moves on, so my music has evolved, and my passions can be more about political causes, or more positive and less about the angst."

Alanis Morissette begins her set at the MTV Immies.
